Fashion for 2007

That’s right folks, it’s a whole new year and its time to spruce up your wardrobe for the up and coming fashions of 2007! Gothic Angst Webzine has a few predictions for the New Year to keep you looking scary as hell!! *Ahem* I mean “great”…looking “great.”

These days it seems like everywhere you go, all you see is kids in black. In recent years we have seen the resurgence of both the classic punk style and the rockabilly style into the mainstream fashion circuit. This year we can plan to continue seeing those trends on a regular basis but expect them to be pushed back in time to an even more primordial version of their prior incarnations. We can also expect to see a strange dichotomy taking place. With the punk and rockabilly fads gaining momentum, we’re also going to see a slight resurgence in the pleather and bondage areas of the gothic movement producing a strange mix of the two styles. Expect to see the oh-so punk style straight leg jeans paired along with buckled shirts, pleather corsets, and spiky knee-hi boots. All that topped with a faux-hawk and long sideburns!

In women’s fashion we’re seeing the waist on the rise! No more are the days of hip-hugger, low-rise jeans with an exorbitant amount of midriff on display. Oh no my friend! Style this year is going to reflect the curves of the natural waist as opposed to the hips. This style trend is great for women with curves as it accents the natural beauty of the curvy figure however watch out to not go overboard with it. Too much flounce at the waist could give the illusion that you are bigger than you really are. This style is great with urban looks when paired with a waist cincher, and even better when used with elegant empire cut dresses. This season try meshing two contrasting styles together. A typical 1950’s style housewife dress in a fantastic Asian print paired with patent leather heels looks awesome! Throw in some spiky bracelets and a fishnet shrug and your ready to go out!

Another trend that has been on the fashion palette this past year is the rise of the neckline. You will continue to see necklines rise this upcoming year, mimicking the old Victorian style high lace collars. Gone is the day of low cut shirts with cleavage-a-plenty on display. This year, try mixing a ruffled, high-necked lace shirt with a cute corset or that waist cincher for a style that is so vintage its new again!

Men’s fashions this past year have taken the most dramatic turn that *I* have personally seen. For years upon years men’s styles have consisted mostly of baggy or at least relaxed cut jeans and pants. This year, the trend is on the rise for ‘skinny’ or tight leg jeans. While I was initially resistant to this style, I have to admit they have grown on me. The look for men has become more androgynous in the past year and we will continue to see that trend on the rise. Expect to see tighter fitting clothing, more earrings, more jewelry in general.

While pet-able fabrics such as velvet and satin have always held their own in the Goth scene, I have recently seen the resurgence of knits coming out onto the dance floor. Especially stripy knits! For both boys and girls, stripes are going to be in this season.

Looking down at those smurf kickers! Recently the trends have been aiming more down to comfortable flats instead of pointy heels however it will be a dark day when boots go out of season for the Goth community! Recently I have seen a resurgence of the traditional “witch” style boots with the slightly pointed toe and slightly raised heel. That is a trend we’re going to keep seeing in 2007.

Overall this year it looks like we are going to be seeing a resurgence of the ‘old school’ goth styles and vintage styles and a drop in the more flashy ‘glitter and glam’ styles we have become accustomed to. For more goth fashion trends, check back here at Gothic Angst Webzine throughout the year.

  1. Neat tips, but please- we’re, not were. We are, not were.

  2. Thanks for catching that, Jim. Not sure how that flew under my radar. Typo repaired. Note, being that this is a fairly old article when I did the switch over, there may have been characters lost switching from the old system to the new one. As it is, the older articles are not being actively searched and updated for typos. There are too many to tackle right now.
