Breathers: A Zombie's Lament

Scott G. Browne’s first published novel, Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament, is a fun, if slightly Palahniuk-flavored, shuffle through the world as seen through a zombie’s eyes. The main character is a zombie named Andy, and life is tough. Through the story, he meets a girl, discovers the wonders of eating “breather,” battles a local fraternity and deals with life after death.

Breathers is a fun, exciting and fast read. The prose is crisp and well thought out and the twist late in the book is a wonderful device helping to cement Andy as a wonderfully sympathetic character. The world feels deep and familiar, while Scott keeps descriptive writing to a minimum, allowing the reader to stretch their imaginative muscle.

Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament is a clever, clearly conceptualized and enjoyable read. It is written in a comfortable style and the story flows well from page to page. If you love Chuck Palahniuk hunger for brains after finishing World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide, Breathers should definitely be on your list.
