Open Grave: The Book of Horror
Open Grave is a collection of short fiction and one novella. The short stories are amusing and anecdotal at best and painful to muddle through at worst. The plotlines are thin and the characters are one-dimensional. Though some of the ideas are novel, the collection is disappointing.
The namesake novella is uninspired. The plot is trite and the twists are predictable. The main character consistently betrays his girlfriend, fathers a child with a witch, and once the spell is broken he goes back for more, again and again. The rest of the cast is as foolish and weakly portrayed. Ultimately, Open Grave was a disappointment. If you are interested in an example of what not to do while writing horror, this is your ticket.
