Review: Mill Avenue Vexations Volume Three – A serial by Kyt Dotson

By H.M. Garber

By H. M. GarberKyt Dotson’s third volume, Incantations of Incarnations, consists of three more chapters of her “Mill Avenue Vexations”: Kel the Bosh, Incantations of Incarnation, and Friday Night on the Ave.

The first chapter of this volume is titled Kel the Bosh, which is Romani (Gypsy) for “play the fiddle.” In this chapter, we follow Darlene, the fourth ritualist, as she prepares for her violin concert. Megan delivers Richard’s message to Vex (and Nathan). In Incantations of Incarnation, Darlene and Vex (and several uninvolved bystanders) are caught in a wave of eerie magic that flows from Darlene’s violin concert. Vex must literally face down her inner demons if she is to make any headway at stopping the darkness that we know is coming. In Friday Night on the Ave, Vex and Patrick are reunited, but the malevolent force stalking the campus claims another victim.

While these chapters advance the story, Kyt does not lose her ability to describe the small town college setting that she has created. She is as equally adept at describing Darlene’s preparations with her violin as she is at describing the atmosphere in a local landmark store. While readers might have been, at the end of the last volume, tempted to guess who was behind the darkness, Kyt adds several plot twists that throw off all attempts to predict her ending.

The third volume of Mill Avenue Vexations can be found at http://www.millvexations.com/read/index.php, in both an online version and as a downloadable PDF e-book. The e-book version has more fonts, graphics, and formatting, and the layout is closer to a traditional book format.
