About Althaus Magazine

Althaus Magazine was started in 2006 as an online resource for music, art and culture. The current goal is to promote alternative culture by way of highlighting music, literature, fashion and news as it is uncovered.

Althaus Magazine began as Gothic Angst Webzine, an online periodical dedicated to the Gothic subculture. As time went on, it became clear that looking only at the Gothic subculture was far too limiting as there are many other communities which are also providing inspiring and exciting new opportunities for expression and self discovery.

Subsequently the name and the direction changed in order to encourage a greater audience and allow enough room to grow and constantly discover new, interesting ideas as they emerge. Though some popular culture works may appear, the focus of Althaus Magazine is on alternatives to the well known and accepted notions of “the norm.”

The selection of the name ‘Althaus’ was intended to convey the change in direction. In German, althaus means ‘existing house’ and alt haus means ‘old house.’ The current site was built upon the foundation of the existing body of work of the existing house. The Gothic community tends to look back in time to move forward, looking to the old house.

Finally, in a separate interpretation, Althaus also represents the ‘alternative house’ or where alternative culture lives. This is the final, and most important, interpretation in a very functional way. We hope that you come and join us from time to time in our alt haus.

Althaus Magazine began as the brainchild of Chris Stead, but in the past several people were involved with the growth and persistence of the site and these people deserve many thanks.  All names listed below were vital to the development of Althaus.
